We always say, "The world's technology runs on software. Secure software makes the world better." And we are proven right again by the Crowdstrike outage.
Round the world, millions of Windows (and Microsoft) devices went blue, unusable caused by one faulty code in CrowdStrike's software update. Planes were grounded, businesses paused, and hospital systems and bank services were disrupted.
The prevention of this is a core reason we exist: to provide peace of mind to technology leaders by ensuring Business Continuity.
While this wasn't a security incident, this outage from Crowdstike's software update was caused by a faulty piece of code that malfunctioned.
As The Guardian said, "The software intended to protect against crashes and disruptions in vital computer systems ended up taking them down."
The impact of this seemingly small piece of code impacted 8.5 million devices and business has rendered this new Crowdstrike update to Windows insecure.
Even now, though the problem has been found, a fix is still on the way, and many businesses still bear the effects of this outage.
This is one wakeup call we need; to check 3rd service providers and even our own code and design to prevent things like this.
UPDATE:
CrowdStrike is now facing a lawsuit from investors who claim they were misled and "defrauded investors by concealing flaws with its software testing."
The CrowdStrike outage led to a 32% loss in share price, equivalent to a $25 billion loss in the company's market value.
While the result of this lawsuit is unpredictable, as CrowdStrike strongly denies the claim and says that "the case lacks merit," we can't deny that it continues to keep CrowdStrike negatively in the news.
Additional Impact of the CrowdStrike Outage:
Reduced investor confidence (resulting in a lawsuit)
Reduced company's market value ($25 Billion)
